Your sightings and who sees them
The short version: your records are yours. Nobody else sees them unless you choose to share them.
What Trip Tick does with your records
Nothing, beyond showing them back to you. Trip Tick does not sell your sightings, pass them to anyone else, or pool them into anything public. They are not sent to eBird, BirdTrack, county recorders or any other scheme.
If you want your records to be used for conservation and research, please submit them to eBird, BirdTrack or your county recorder as well. Trip Tick is for your own trips and lists, and is not a replacement for those.
What other people can see, and only when you choose
- Friends. Nobody is your friend on Trip Tick until you both agree. Friends see the email address you signed up with, and can compare dashboard totals with you.
- Sharing a trip, location or tag. A copy goes to the friend you choose, one at a time, and only when you send it. They have to accept it before it is added to their records.
- Species alerts. An alert is sent only when you tap to send it, and only to friends who have chosen to follow yours.
- Leaderboards. Members of a leaderboard you have joined see your name and your totals, not your individual sightings. If the board’s owner turns on a public link, anyone with that link can see the same names and totals.
- Send List. This creates a plain-text list of a trip for you to send by email or message. Where it goes is up to you.
If you never use any of these, your records are seen by you alone.
Who runs it, and who else handles it
Trip Tick is run by one person, Matt. The admin area shows him counts for each account, such as how many trips and locations it has, so he can see whether the app is working for people. It does not show what you saw. He only looks at actual records when that’s needed to fix a problem, usually one you have reported.
Your records are stored with the companies that host the app (Supabase for the database and Vercel for the website). They store them for Trip Tick and do not use them for anything else. Stripe handles payments and never sees your records. Anonymous page-view figures are collected to see which parts of the app are used. These do not include your sightings.
Taking your records with you
You can download all of your sightings and locations as CSV files at any time from Profile & Settings. They open in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. Nothing is locked in.
Deleting your account removes your records permanently. If you cancel Premium, your records stay exactly where they are.
If this ever changes
Any future feature that lets other people see records will be something you choose to switch on, not something switched on for you. It will be announced in What’s New before it arrives, and it will never apply to records you have already made without your say-so.
This page covers your sightings. Your personal details, such as your name, email address and payment details, are covered by the Privacy Policy. Questions? Email info@trip-tick.co.uk.
